Forest Stewardship Program

Water, Restoration, Recreation, wildlife

Forests in Delaware cover about 352,000 acres, or around one-fourth of the First State. But did you know that about 78 percent of forests are owned privately, primarily by individuals and families? These “non-industrial private forest” (NIPF) lands constitute sustainable and renewable resources that provide many natural benefits: clean water, wildlife habitat, better air quality, places for recreation, and valuable wood products. With proper management, these precious resources can continue to provide benefits far into the future, but Delaware’s forests must be managed for health and sustainability.

Keeping Delaware’s Forests Healthy and Productive
Many private forest landowners want to enhance the economic value of their land while also protecting important natural resources such as wildlife habitat and water quality.

Our Forest Stewardship Program connects landowners with professional foresters who develop customized forest stewardship plans. These plans help ensure private forests remain healthy, productive, and resilient, supporting environmental, economic, and community benefits for years to come.

Forest Stewardship Plans: Personalized Guidance for Your Land

The Delaware Forest Service offers landowners direct access to professional foresters who can help define and achieve long-term goals for their property. During an on-site visit, a DFS forester will walk your land, listen to your management objectives, and discuss the unique opportunities your forest provides.

Whether your priorities include enhancing wildlife habitat, improving riparian areas, producing timber, increasing recreational opportunities, or a combination of goals, our foresters will craft a customized Forest Stewardship Plan tailored to your vision.

As the landowner, you play an essential role in the process, your review and approval ensure the final plan reflects your objectives and supports the sustainable health and productivity of your forest.

What happens after I get a Forest Stewardship Plan?
Forest Stewardship Plans provide clear, practical guidance tailored to your property. You can carry out the recommended actions on your own or work with resource professionals who can help you implement your long-term forest management goals.

As a landowner, you’ll be asked to make a good-faith commitment to carry out the recommended silvicultural practices outlined in your plan, helping ensure the resiliency, long-term health and productivity of your forest.

(Your participation in the program is strictly voluntary.)

Is there any cost or obligation for the plan?
There is no cost to a landowner for the preparation of a Forest Stewardship Plan. All owners of nonindustrial private forests are eligible. These private forests include rural lands with existing tree cover or land suited for growing trees.
